Installing, removing, updating

SceneCity's installation, removal and updating are less straightforward than your usual Blender addon, they have more steps, but they are very easy, simply follow the instructions below.

Do not hesitate to report any issue you may encounter at any step, I'm here to help: couturier.arnaud@gmail.com. Send me a screenshot of the error message and a quick explanation of the problem and we'll get it fixed together ASAP.

1 - Installing SceneCity

1 - Download the addon and the assets packs

  1. Go to your Gumroad library, and open the SceneCity product page.

  2. Download the addon zip file:
    SceneCity 1.9 - Windows 64 bit - install in Blender 2.92.zip
The exact version may vary, and choose the version for your operating system.

  3. Download the 3 assets pack files (the exact versions may vary):

    1. Assets City v2.0 - Install from addon preferences in 1.9.pack

    2. Assets Vegetation v1.0 - Install from addon preferences in 1.9.pack

    3. Assets Terrains v2.0 - Install from addon preferences in 1.9.pack

  4. Keep the files in your download folder for the time being.

2 - Install the addon

  1. Open Blender’s user preferences
Depending on your version of Blender, normally is in the Edit menu

  2. Click on the Add-ons category (on the left) then click on Install... (top right)

  3. Navigate on your hard drive to the files you downloaded, then choose the addon zip file and confirm your choice.
Installation should be fast and without errors.

  4. Find the newly installed addon in the list (it should be already visible by default, or use the search box) and enable the addon.

  5. Optional: In the addon's preferences, let the it know about your theme (if it's mostly dark or light), so that the correct colors scheme will be used in SceneCity's node editor.

  6. Optional: you may have to save preferences (from the bottom of the window), if auto-save preferences is disabled, so the addon will always be enabled (or not) each time you start Blender.

3 - Install the asset packs

From the addon's preferences, install each asset pack:

  1. Click the Install button next to a pack.
The needed version of the pack is displayed, so make sure you have downloaded the correct version of the pack asked by your version of SceneCity.

  2. Navigate to the pack file you downloaded, choose it and confirm your choice.

  3. Wait a moment, installation should take some time, SceneCity is decompressing all the files in the pack and placing them in the correct location (location is a new .SceneCity folder in your user home directory of your operating system. On Windows it's C:\Users\YourUsername\.SceneCity). Do not force-close Blender or this step will be incomplete. Once it is done, you should see the pack marked as installed.

4 - Delete the downloaded files

All the downloaded files are no longer needed, so you can delete them if you wish.

2 - Removing SceneCity

2.1 - On Windows

Removal of SceneCity from Blender is done in several steps (the details for each step follow below):

  1. Remove the asset packs, then disable the addon (and make sure it'll stay disabled after Blender restarts)

  2. Restart Blender then remove the addon

  3. Delete the empty assets folder manually

⚠️ You tried to remove the addon the usual way, without following the instructions, and you got an error message? No worries. Nothing serious happened, but SceneCity is still not removed. Just follow the instructions to cleanly remove it.

1 - Remove the asset packs and disable the addon

In Blender, from the addon's preferences, click the Remove button next to each installed asset pack.

Then disable the addon, and save Blender preferences to keep SceneCity disabled the next time you lauch Blender, that's important.

2 - Restart Blender and remove the addon

Close all Blender's instances, then restart it. Check that SceneCity is disabled, do NOT enable it. Expand its details, and click on the Remove button (while keeping it disabled).

3 - Delete the empty assets folder manually

It is named .SceneCity, located in your user home directory. On Windows that's C:\Users\YourUsername\.SceneCity

The folder will normally be empty, but now, SceneCity is completely erased from your computer (how sad).

2.2 - On Linux and Mac

Removal of SceneCity from Blender is done in several steps:

  1. Remove the asset packs, then remove the addon

  2. Delete the empty assets folder manually

1 - Remove the asset packs and remove the addon

In Blender, from the addon's preferences, click the Remove button next to each installed asset pack. Then remove the addon itself with its Remove button.

2 - Delete the empty assets folder manually

It is named .SceneCity, located in your user home directory. It should be /home/YourUsername/.SceneCity

The folder will normally be empty, but now, SceneCity is completely erased from your computer (how sad).

3 - Updating SceneCity

  1. Remove the addon (follow the instructions above) but WITHOUT removing the asset packs.

  2. Install the new version following the instructions above, and enable it.

  3. Check in the addon's preferences if any asset pack needs updating. If that's the case, remove, download, and install those packs.
